Reading poetry demands much from the reader.
Great poetry is great because it provides insight into the nature of man and
the world we live in. However much great poetry isn't terribly accessible. For
writers and experienced readers T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Jorie Graham, Wallace
Stevens, Laura Riding, Delmore Schwarz, Osip Mandelstam, William Carlos
Williams, Lyn Hejinian, John Berryman, Gerhard Manley Hopkins, Paul Celan and
John Ashbery provide some of the greatest moments of epiphany available in
literature, but they are not for everyone.
For the casual reader you will find more
accessible beauty with Stanley Kunitz, W.S. Merwin, Philip Levine, Anne
Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Jane Kenyon, Robert Frost, and Pablo Neruda.
