Collection Ideas

Lover's of Jane Austen and her works need not give up on the thought of building a fine collection. While it is true that first editions of the major novels have reached exorbitant levels, there are many other areas that a Jane collector could pursue:

  1. There are numerous illustrated editions of Jane Austen. Make a collection of editions illustrated by each of the illustrators.

  2. There are wonderfully bound editions of Jane Austen by famous Victorian and later binders. Make a collection of Austen's works bound by Bayntun-Riviere, Sutcliffe, Zaehndorf, Sangorski, Remnant and Edmonds, H. N. Humphreys, Chivers and others.

  3. Collect all the editions of a favorite novel. You may never own the first, but you can make quite a collection of the rest.

  4. Sequels - Make a collection of first editions of the Jane Austen sequels and influenced works.

  5. Criticism by Major Authors - Make a collection of the Jane criticism by E.M. Forester, Virginia Woolf and others.

  6. Early criticism - Make a collection of, say, the first fifty years of criticism.

  7. Build Jane's library - Collect contemporaneous editions of each of the books Jane references in her novels and letters.

  8. Biographical material and letters - Collect all the memoirs, letters and biographies of Jane Austen.

  9. Criticism of a favorite novel - Collect all the criticism of relating to a favorite novel.

  10. Reconstruct Jane's world. Collect newspapers, magazines and popular novels published during Jane's life that would likely have been accessible to her.
